Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival (2023)

I remember wanting to cover the Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival last year but I was too late on the draw. This year they contacted me about checking out their event and I couldn't be happier to do so. Honestly, I wish I was closer to the City of Brotherly Love because it seems as if they have tons of parties happening to coincide with the screenings. While I wish I had enjoyed more of the films, I’m always happy to watch new projects from fresh voices.

  • Scream Therapy (2023) ★★★½

I wasn't sold immediately, but as soon as things start popping off they don't stop. Every joke hits so hard and so rapidly that you'll find yourself exhausted by how clever everything is. Sign ME up for more Scream Therapy!

  • Sweet Relief (2023) ★★

It's pretty, but just because you can let the camera linger a little too long doesn't mean you should. There's good stuff, but unfortunately, it gets overshadowed by trying too hard. I like Malick too, but let Malick do Malick.

  • Hunting for the Hag (2023) ★

This was a chore, and while there were tense moments, having to sit through the awkward dialogue to get there wasn't worth it. The ending presents a decent enough setup, but why not start there? Who cares about Candy or Beth?

Scream Therapy is the real standout here, but that doesn’t mean the other films are without merit. If you have the time, I suggest looking into any of the projects that may catch your eye. Thank you to the Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival for sending the films my way, it’s always interesting to see where alternative film is headed.
