Troy Duffy - The Boondock Saints, Volume 1: Blood Origin, The Boondock Saints, Guest House (2025) #video

Few films have carved out a cult following quite like The Boondock Saints. Written and directed by Troy Duffy, the 1999 crime thriller about Irish-Catholic vigilantes Connor and Murphy MacManus grew from a scrappy indie into a cornerstone of cult cinema, spawning a sequel and maintaining a fiercely loyal fanbase for more than 25 years.

Now, Duffy is bringing fans back to the beginning with The Boondock Saints, Volume 1: Blood Origin, his debut novel that traces the untold story of the brothers’ rise. The book, released in both eBook and audiobook formats, dives deep into Connor and Murphy’s Irish roots, their first brushes with Boston’s criminal underworld, and the violent legacy that shaped them into legends.

Duffy admits the project has been years in the making, largely fueled by fan curiosity. “Over the last 25 years, the fans have had all these questions,” he told CineDump. “Why don’t they know their father? How did they meet Rocco? Brick by brick, the story built itself, and Blood Origin is basically a love letter to the fans”.

Writing the novel also gave Duffy the chance to expand characters in ways that film never allowed. He points to Rocco, the mob package boy who becomes the brothers’ closest ally. “On screen, we were limited—29 days of shooting doesn’t give you everything. On the page, I got to show Rocco as I always intended: street smart, the guy who keeps things from spiraling out of control, someone who teaches Connor and Murphy how the underworld really works”.

While the book delivers the blood, bullets, and razor-sharp one-liners that fans expect, Duffy insists it’s more than just another crime saga. “That’s why I called it Blood Origin—it’s about family and legacy,” he explained. “Imagine what happens when Connor and Murphy realize they’ve followed in the bloody footsteps of a father they never knew. That’s a spiritual confrontation, not just a criminal one”.

Clocking in at 45 chapters and a staggering 22-hour audiobook—narrated by Duffy himself—Blood Origin is just the start. Duffy sees this as the first entry in a much larger literary journey. “Every time I think about it, I realize I can write this series forever. The ideas are endless and ongoing”.

For fans who have lived with The Boondock Saints for decades, this new chapter offers not just nostalgia but revelation. As Duffy put it: “Connor and Murphy’s journey is dark, thrilling, and unforgettable—a deeper look into the world fans fell in love with on screen”.
