Casting Underway for Perplection, a Surreal Psychological Thriller Exploring Identity and Madness

As production gears up for the highly anticipated psychological thriller Perplection, filmmaker Daniel Knight has officially begun casting for key roles in the film. With principal photography set to begin in May 2025, the project promises a mind-bending exploration of sanity, identity, and perception.

At the center of the film is Viana Young, a clinical psychologist who finds herself trapped in a shifting reality where vibrant colors and deep shadows battle for dominance. As her perception fractures, she begins to question whether her mind is betraying her or if something sinister is taking control. Kristina Baryshnikova has been cast in the lead role, with Knight also set to appear in the film. Additional casting is currently underway, with announcements expected in the coming months.

Beyond its psychological depth, Perplection is distinguished by its unique visual style. The film employs a striking contrast between vivid colors and haunting black-and-white sequences to mirror the protagonist’s unraveling state of mind. Knight cites cinematic influences such as Dementia and Shutter Island, while also drawing from the surreal, dreamlike aesthetics of Bergman, Tarkovsky, and Lynch.

"We are creating a film where the visuals aren’t just a backdrop but an integral part of the storytelling," Knight explained. "Color and shadow will guide the audience through Viana’s journey, immersing them in her psychological descent."

Filming locations will include Palm Desert and Manhattan Beach, chosen for their atmospheric qualities and ability to enhance the film’s contrasting visual palette. The production team is also exploring additional locations that can further elevate the surreal and unsettling nature of the film.

With a focus on psychological complexity and visual storytelling, Perplection is being positioned as a major festival contender, targeting screenings at Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, and AFI Fest, as well as international showcases like Cannes, Berlinale, and Clermont-Ferrand.
